Rickshaw is a new San Francisco-based bag company. Inspired by the creative energy of our city, urban cycling and an intense desire to make great products, we started Rickshaw to satisfy our own personal passion for bags. We know how people love their bags. We think it’s cool—if not kind of weird—the way people grow attached to their favorite bag as though it were a pet or loved-one.

We also love city living—the excitement, diversity, creativity and culture we experience in a fast-paced metropolitan environment. With access to art, theater, music and restaurants, there’s an energy that pulses through the community. We design our bags for people who thrive on the urban experience and celebrate the creative spirit.

We’re a new company, but we have many years of experience designing and manufacturing great bags and providing unique customer experiences. In addition to our passion for bags, we share a strong set of humanistic, environmental and social values that guide the way we conduct every aspect of our business. The name of our company derives from three Japanese characters meaning “human powered vehicle”—delightfully apropos for a company making bags for bicycle enthusiasts and urban commuters, and our metaphor for the strength of the human spirit.

‘Unravel follows the Western worlds least wanted clothes, on a journey across Northern India, from sea to industrial interior. They get sent to Panipat, a sleepy town and the only place in the world that wants them, recycling them back into yarn.

Reshma is a bright, inquisitive woman working in a textile recycling factory in small time India, who dreams of travelling the vast distances the clothes she handles have. While Reshma shows us how these garments get transformed, she and other women workers reflect on these clothes. Despite limited exposure to western culture, they construct a picture of how the West is, using both their imagination and the rumours that travel with the cast-offs.’

Everything Must Go follows the journeys of worn clothing as it is sold for reuse and recycling across the world. This exhibition brings invisible global waste economies into public view, explores the people involved and the impact these businesses have upon their lives, and questions our ability to control, contain and curtail waste.

Everything Must Go contextualises anthropological research on textile recycling in India and the UK with collaborative projects including Meghna Gupta’s film Unravel and photographs by Tim Mitchell, hosts recycling workshops with Lizzie Harrison of Remade in Leeds and showcases a resurfaced textile created by Kate Goldsworthy.

It marks the culmination of the Waste of The World research project, funded by the ESRC. This investigated global flows of waste, including local waste management, food waste, the second-hand clothing trade, steel and nuclear industries and ship-breaking.

To celebrate, we’re featuring our favorite unique, handmade calendars, made by independent designers on Etsy. You can see all of the calendars we’ve featured here!

That’s a polar bear in a plaid shirt. Yep. So good.

Corella Design calls this an animal lover’s calendar, but I think it’s more of a strange conversation piece. I want to have a Valentine’s Day party just so I can hear someone say, “…is that a wolf wearing a hat?”

TELFORD. = Yesterday I decided to sport my Lakai Telford mid-tops, as the weather was bitter chilly & I wanted to keep my tootsies toasty! Gotta say, I forgot how snug these shoes fit.

It definitely reminded me that Lakai are second fave skate-sneak brand, next to my beloved etnies collection. I am also impressed to find out they also have their own Eco-Recycled Shoe program. -iLOVE it.

“The idea for the The Sway came a few months later, when I realized I wanted to design in a sustainable way and use reclaimed and recycled materials,” explains the designer, whose collection of tough leather biker jackets and durable handbags are fashioned entirely from salvaged leathers.

This may or may not appeal to vegetarians but it will appeal to eco conscious and environmentally friendly people ( I hope that includes all of us by now). Just think of all the possibilities for reusing old leather from motorcycles and old horse saddles. Belinda’s genius idea is also a very fashionable one. Check out my favorite of her A/W 2012 leather jackets.

Belinda shares some of the special details of the Bondi Biker jacket with Thread NY:

”One of my jackets, the ‘Bondi Biker,’ has over 1,000 metal studs,” she boasts.
